Chuck’s going to the next one first. When he finished, his group of old Teddy boys (who may only be 35) went crazy. They weren’t interested in us, there were about 150 people jumping, screaming, and throwing things in front of us. I saw an arm walking up, and a few seconds later I had a very warm face. I was covered in blood: someone threw a coin at me and cut open my eyelids.
There’s no doubt that this is my favorite location, not just as a performer. When I was in London, I booked two shows a week: from screening in Jurassic Park to sitting on stage watching Evgeny Kissing. What I saw there had a huge impact on my music. The location is a unique cross-cultural experience: you get these high-brow performances, but also low eyebrows… Like a muse.
When Muse performed there in 2008, I was eager to play the huge organ. We have this song, Megalomania, from our second album, which we haven’t done live in years. You have to play an instrument in the audience, so when the other members of the band are on stage, I have a room audience around me.
We were poor kids in 2009 and I was standing next to Paul McCartney’s stage. It was disturbing to know that he saw our voices checked. It’s humiliating to bring out the best artists. It feels like the Museum of Art and Culture: it feels like arrival: it’s been around for so long, playing it gives you a touch of hope that your music will stick around too.
