On this day Eddie O'Sullivan retired as Ireland Head coach
Eddie O’Sullivan announced his abdication as head coach of Ireland on this day in 2008.
O'Sullivan's seven-year spell leader came to an end after a
group-stage exit at the World Cup was followed by a fourth-place finish in the
Six Nations Ireland's bad performance in the championship since 1999.

The news completed a dramatic revers for O'Sullivan, who guides Ireland to three Triple heads in four years from 2004 - 2007, led them as high as third in the world rankings, and had been peaked as the British and Irish Lions of the next coach.
Given a four-year contract just before the 2007 World Cup,
O'Sullivan then saw his team produce unsatisfactory victories over Namibia and
Georgia and lost to France and Argentina as they exited the pool.
The ensuing Six Nations campaign included a battle to beat
Italy and a home defeat by Wales, before concluding with a 33-10 defeat to
England at Twickenham that proved O'Sullivan's final game - his announcement of the resignation came four days later.
In a statement issued by his agent John Baker, O'Sullivan said: At the conclusion of the Six Nations, and with great care in my role as head coach of the national team, I have decided to step down.
In a time so I would like to thank my management team and always players I have been working with during my time as IRFU head. Their dedication and expertise in representing their country are complete there. I would be also like to thank the Irish Rugby Football Union for their abiding support as a coach on the team.
O'Sullivan, who was 49 at the time, went on to earn a second
run for the United States national team and became head coach at Biarritz and
Old Belvedere.
