It has emerged that the main reason for Matt Proudfoot, England’s leading coach, to visit the Sale Sharks this week was to meet 21-year-old Ashman, who was part of Gregor Townsend’s Six Nations squad.
Ashman, who played for Scotland’s senior teams, could not force past hookers George Turner and David Cherry to win a Test debut during this year’s tournament.
Ashman’s father is from Edinburgh, where he borrowed a temporary loan from Sale in 2019. It is thought that a change of allegiance from Scotland to England before the 2023 World Cup would not have happened.
Toronto-born Ashman played for Sandbach RFC in Cheshire before joining Sale’s academy in 2017. He represented Scotland at the Under-16, U17, and U19 levels and scored seven tries in the 2019 Under-20 World Championship.

He played for the first time on the Premiership bench last season against the Leicester Tigers. Then rugby director Steve Diamond described him as “a child who will go a long way”.
“We want him to play as [first-choice Sale hooker] Akker van der Merwe, where he attacks hand-to-hand and continues,” added Diamond.
Diamond’s successor, Alex Sanderson, admitted on Tuesday that he did not know much about Ashman. The prospects for England such as Bevan Rodd and Raffi Quirke. Before joining the club but was aroused by the talent of the graduates of Sale’s academy.
Sanderson also revealed that Proudfoot has also spoken to Rodd. Another leading and talented rower who has impressed with loosehead prop in recent months.
