Fiji may be forced to set up a super rugby team in New Zealand
John O'Connor, CEO of the Fiji Rugby Union revealed that if COVID-19 continues to hinder international travel, a contingency plan has been developed to establish a New Zealand base in Drua, Fiji.

O'Connor said having a
team of top Fiji players regularly participating in Super Rugby matches
"could change the rules of the game" in preparation for 2023
World Cup in France and beyond.
He said: "For Super
Rugby, it is also a good thing to have a team that is not really focused on
defense and is ready to play."
Fiji coach Vern Cotter
warmly welcomed the news that Drua will compete with 5 New Zealand teams, 5
Australian teams, and Moana Pasifika, but warned that the rugby level will be
higher.
The Drua plans to
participate in the 2022 Super Rugby tournament. This move aims to retain local
talent in the islands while allowing foreign players to go home to see the
number of matches and the best rugby experience to increase.
O'Connor told Sun-Sport: that the ongoing impact of the pandemic could force Drua to come to New Zealand in the match's first season, prompting a contingency plan. FRU is currently preparing to announce the appointment of a head coach and players in the coming weeks and months, and the new team plans to begin pre-season training in October.
O'Connor said: "This
probability is too great to be determined by the opening of the (travel)
bubble. If we have to move to New Zealand in the first year or at other times,
that is our will to make New Zealand Rugby.
At the same time, Fiji hopes to submit documents to New Zealand
Rugby (NZR) within a few days to demonstrate the feasibility of sending an
additional team to the Super Rugby team in 2022.
