Bernd Leno rushed Richarlison's low
cross into the net in the 76th minute to decide the game and moved 8th-placed Toffees
to 52 points, one behind the Reds and three off 4th-placed the Blues, while
Arsenal’s stay 9th on 46.
Everton defender Mason Holgate
said: "To dig deep and get the success is massive. The Gunners want the
same thing as we do [European football] so to take the points from them is
massive. We've got to be consistent now."
This was Everton's first success at
Arsenal since 1996 and fated Arsenal’s to a 7th home loss of the premier league
season, the Gunners poorest record since the 1992-93 season.
Ceballos Calum and Chambers went
close for the Gunners before Richarlison skipped past Granit Xhaka to the
byline and sent a low cross into the 6-yard box, which Bernd Leno underestimated
and steered between his own legs and into the net.
Ancelotti told to BBC Sports that, "It
was really important to stay attached to the top of the table. The performance
was good. It's all good news tonight and this gives us confidence for the next
games.”
"Finally I can say we are
back."
The Gunners were awarded a penalty
in the 2nd half after Richarlison nicked Ceballos - but it was inverted by the
video assistant referee for a Nicolas Pepe offside in the build-up.
Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta
said: "We were the better team but there are certain decisions that we
can't control.
"To disallow a penalty 15
seconds before - [we had] eight or nine touches [after Pepe was offside] - I
saw it 10 times and I don't get it. It can be taken the way they want. Zero
control. Somebody has to explain that."
Everton had failed to success in
their past six matches in all competitions, removing any real room for error as
they push for a place of Champions League.
This victory keeps them 8th in the
premier league but they are now within 3-points of Chelsea and West Ham United
and Chelsea, who are 5th and 4th respectively and play each other on Saturday.
Arsenal Team distracted by protests or Europe League?
The Gunners chances of qualifying
for next Champions League season now depends on winning this year's Europa
League - they sit nine points behind the European places in the Premier League,
while the first leg of their Europa League semi-final is at Villarreal on
Thursday.
Arsenal’s were
without forwards Aubameyang and Lacazette because of illness and
injury on Saturday night and had to reach at the ground early to avoid the
protests.
Mikel Arteta said: "We need to
go through the disappointment and focus our energy. The semi-final is more than
crucial for us. I don't want to use any excuses, I understand the protests.
"On the pitch performance-wise
we were the better team, we controlled the game and we had some opportunities
and openings."
