The Welsh Union will support Pivac to lead the team through the Rugby World Cup 2023

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is supporting Wayne Pivac to continue as coach until at least the 2023 World Cup after winning the Six Nations League last month.

Pivac succeeded Warren Gatland in 2019, but there was a fiasco last year that saw Wales finish fifth in the Six Nations League and has since been heavily criticized.

However, the 58-year-old turned his fate and took Wales to the second Six Nations Championship in three years, winning four of the five games, four points higher than second-placed France.

WRU CEO Steve Phillips said, "Wayne and his management team and participants have accomplished the task."

“I know on behalf of the Board of Directors and everyone at WRU, I congratulate them on their accomplishments and we look forward to their continued progress towards France in 2023.

"Wayne has strong views on the 2023 Rugby World Cup and has developed a comprehensive plan for Wales in the hope that Wales will reach our peak with the full support of WRU."

Phillips said it's important to give Pivac a certain amount of time to complete his project.

He added, "To avoid ‘knee-jerk’ reactions, “we will measure progress based on short- and long-term goals. Wayne, management, and participants have made very good progress anyway.”

“Winning the championship this year is a short-term goal, but we are deeply impressed with the performance this fall. When the stall was set to blood new players, improve strength in complexity and bed in a new and diverse approach to strategies."
