Aaron Smith has selected a Springbok as the best scrum-half to ever play at a Rugby World Cup

Aaron Smith of All Blacks scrum-half said that although the New Zealander won the 2015 World Cup, his South African representative, Fourie du Preez, was 9th in the Rugby World Cup. The best player ever.

Considered by many to be one of the greatest center-backs in history, Smith took to Twitter and chose the Scrum-half of retired Springboks as his pick after World Rugby asked, "The best scrum-half in the Rugby World Cup."

In the 11 years from 2004 to 2015, he served in 76 caps and won three World Cup. Du Preez raised the Webb Ellis Cup in 2007 and Smith also raised the eight years later.

Besides winning the World Cup and winning the Super Rugby title three times with the Bulls, South Africa is considered one of the best tactical ideas in this game.

The two players faced each other twice in "Test Rugby", and New Zealand topped the list both times. In fact, Smith is Du Preez's ninth opponent in the Springbok's last ever game - the Twickenham World Cup 2015 semifinal and the All Blacks won.

Smith isn't the only player to have won du Preez so nobly. Australia's great Will Genia has dubbed the springbok the highest scrum-half of all time. They two faced each other six times in international rugby matches, including the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Wellington in 2011.

Of these three, Smith is the only test player still active as Genia withdrew from international competitions at the end of the 2019 World Cup. Smith, 32, will continue to grow his legacy for years to come, which should mean, among other things, becoming a test centurion this year, as he currently has 987 caps.
