Manchester United facing Premier League points deduction after fans’ Protests
Manchester United could face a Premier
League points deduction after supporters’ demonstrations split into the Old
Trafford stadium and onto the pitch, causing the highly awaited match with
Liverpool to be suspended.
Football Association and Premier
League are inspecting the mass protests around stadium last weekend and are
speaking with Manchester
United and native police to determine exactly what happened and who was
responsible.
According to PL rules, points can
be deducted from a team when a football club fails to ensure the safety of its staff
and players, including entry and exit from the stadium.
Should Man Utd be found responsible
for failing to contain the mass demonstrations, they could suffer a deduction
from the PL.
The Football Association can also
impose huge fines and reward for Liverpool for its costs during the day, and in
risky conditions implement ground closures and suspensions from rivalries –
although neither are expected to be considered on this circumstance.
The protests against the ownership
of the football club were worsened recently by the Glazer family decision to
take part in the formation of the ESL and the protests were organized for
outside the ground on Sunday ahead of the match with the Reds.
When the protests becoming uncontrollable,
the players were held back in their hotels by police as representatives of both
Manchester United and Liverpool came together and decided that for safety
reasons, the game could not go ahead.
Peter Schmeichel Reviews
Man Utd legend Schmeichel called
out the protesters as “idiots and troublemakers” as he defended the Glazer
family over their ownership of the football club.
Peter Schmeichel told CBS Sports:
“I don’t think the die-hard fans were the ones inside the stadium. I think they
are idiots, troublemakers. None of them will remember the good times. Some of
them weren’t even born when the Glazer family took over the football club.”
“The die-hard fans, the true fans,
keep voicing your opinions, but keep it at a proper level. Don’t be stupid
about it. Don’t demand something which is unrealistic. Keep up the pressure,
keep up the ideas.”
“What we’ve learned from the last
two weeks is, if we stand together and we show our opposition to ideas that we
don’t agree with, as a massive group, it does have an effect. I think football,
not Manchester United, is at a crossroads now.”
“There is this incredible
opportunity now to change direction. Something that I think it has needed for a
long, long, long time.”
