Until the 2023 Rugby World Cup, former All Black Kieran Crowley will coach the Italy team
The Italian rugby federation announced on Wednesday that New Zealander Kieran Crowley will take over as head coach of Italy for three years in July and will be included in the 2023 World Cup.
Crowley was part of the 1987 New Zealand World Cup-Winning team. He coached in Canada for eight years, then led Benetton Treviso, the Italian Pro-14 club. Crowley replaced South African Franco Smith, who held the position after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
The federation said 59-year-old Crowley will take over
current coach Franco Smith as a new senior position on July 1. Andrea Moretti,
Marius Goosen, Corrado Pilat and Giovanni Sanguin will assist his coaching
team.
Crowley has been in charge of the Italian Benetton club,
which participates in the PRO14 competition. From 2008 to 2016 he was an
international coach in Canada.
Crowley raised the Webb Ellis trophy in 1987 and said he
looks forward to the challenge of reviving a team called "Azzurri".
Crowley said: “I am honored that the FIR (Federation of Italy) has given me the opportunity to take the lead in leading Italy to the next World Cup.
“In the five years
I've practiced Benetton (Treviso) rugby, I've been able to understand the
country and its culture of rugby. I can't wait to deepen my understanding of
this role.” Italy has become an eternal offshoot of the Six Nations boy. Their
final victory in the competition can be traced back to 2015.
