Sources told NFL Media's Mike Garofolo and Ian Rapoport on Thursday night that the veteran cornerback has signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins after spending the past three seasons with the New England Patriots.
Since the start of the new league season on March 17,
McCourty has become an unrestricted free agent. Reports say this is his
one-year contract. He will be reunited with former Patriots assistant coaches
on Brian Flores' defensive side in Miami's and Josh Boyer.
The 33-year-old Rutgers product served as the captain of his
latest campaign, joining his twin brother Devin McCourty in the Patriots'
secondary. His tenure spans 47 games, including the playoffs, starting with 36
games.
Along the way, he achieved 162 tackles, 23 pass defenses, two
interceptions, and a Super Bowl LIII ring, which played a versatile role,
including safe snaps.
New England originally bought McCourty from the Cleveland Browns for the aggregate prize of Nos. 205 and 219 through the 2018 NFL Draft. He later signed another two-year, $ 10 million contract and exercised his team option last spring.
The current cornerback depth map appears alongside a team
activities hosted by volunteers including Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jalen
Mills, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams, Myles Bryant, Justin Bethel, D'Angelo
Ross, Dee Virgin, and Mike Jackson.
Gilmore earned a base salary of $ 7 million in the contract the year with the Patriots, and Jackson was a limited free agent in the second
round of bidding.
