In an unusual year of Covid-19 interruption, following the three closed training matches against Scotland and Wales in recent years, U20 head coach Alan Dickens' players have been given valuable playing time and learning opportunities to continue development week. The last time happened over the bank holiday weekend in Bristol.

Explaining the reasons behind these encounters, Dickens said: "All of this is for the preparation of the Six Nations and the importance of giving these players some playing time.

"Which was interspersed with a week of training and it was great for us to play them. We played two training matches against Scotland. We had the mentality to play and play, and then we did some things in the week of the first game and Put it in the second game.

“Against Wales, we had another very good week of training onward of the weekend game. Three days of training at Bisham Abbey, led by senior men's team coach Eddie Jones and his assistants John Mitchell and Matt Proudfoot kicked off training.

“Getting them down is great for connecting the path to the senior men's team.”

These encounters will allow the U20 to compete in the Six Nations Championship later this month. "We learned a lot from these games," Dickens said. "It is not only because of the opponent throughout the training camp but also because of the cohesion of this group of players. We have also learned to adapt our game to opponents or circumstances."

The final game was also an opportunity to thank the players' families for their support over the past year, allowing some of the two teams to watch the game outside of social distancing.

Dickens added: "I am saddened that parents have not been able to see their children play sports in the past year. Parental support is very important for player development.

"I think the players are very happy that their parents or siblings come to watch their matches on the weekend, and the parents seem to like to be there."

The England U20 men will play against the French Six Nations team at 5 pm on June 19, giving detailed information on how to watch it in due course.

Dickens will announce his championship line-up on June 11, and the players and management will meet at Bisham Abbey camp on June 13 for a few days of training, before arriving in Wales for the tournament later this week.

"Because the lack of playing time has put me in difficult situations and frustrations and this year I am extremely proud of all the players. But the commitment of the players and the support of the club has been excellent, and I cannot ask them all for more offers.

"Some players who troubled me missed the game due to injuries. I hope they come back next season with a stronger attitude.

“We know there will be players who will miss the game and be disappointed. But you never know what will happen, they can still pick up during the game.
