Former Australian captain Andrew Slack urged Dave Renee to continue the "pick-and-roll" selection strategy as they prepare for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Australian rugby coach Rennie named 11 uncapped players in a squad of 38 on Sunday. They will host the French team in three tests within 11 days of next month.

The tight schedule and bloated line-up mean there will definitely be some changes from test to test, although Rennie said he hopes some key players can play and support them.

Past Reds coach Slack hopes Rennie can provide more consistency, rather than jeopardizing the logging and changes in the later stages of Michael Cheika's testing period.

"I feel like Dave Rennie may have been more inclined to this approach to Cheika last year than he was before," Slack said.

"I hope this situation continues. People like to show confidence.

"If you've played a great game for Australia and you're in good health, then you really want to be in the next game. This is all about the World Cup.

"There always seems to be a saying, 'Oh, we chose this to be on the track, in the World Cup or other competitions, we'll have our best team.' Rugby has no fortune teller. There is some kind of injury in terms of injury. Balanced and realistic, and won't boil players over during a busy schedule. I think it's a good thing to be more consistent in the squad."

While the Australian team has won just two out of 25 trans-Tasman Super Rugby matches, Slack believes the world's seventh-ranked wallabies will be competitive in 2021.

France is in fifth place in the world and plays against two different teams.

"I think we'll have a good lineup," Slack said.

"Obviously the depth of rugby in New Zealand is greater than ours for several reasons.

“Without the Australian rules and rugby league, our depth would be amazing.
