Manchester United Team News: Man Utd announce fan advisory board
Man Utd will create a supporter counseling board and supporter share ownership scheme as the English Premier League football club steps up engagement with its fans following protests against its Glazer family proprietors.
The statement on Friday comes after
supporter demonstrations at the club's Old Trafford ground involving a pitch
invasion which led to the adjournment of Man
Utd's Premier League home competition against the Reds last month.
The Red Devils participation in the
failed European Super League led to the latest occurrence of supporter anger,
which was echoed at other top Premier League football clubs also involved in
the independent league.
In his 1st supporter forum
appearance in more than 15 years, Man Utd co-chairman Joel Glazer guaranteed to
not only invest heavily in facilities at Old Trafford but also make communication
with fans a priority.
Joel Glazer Statement
Joel Glazer said in a statement
that, "Supporters are the lifeblood of Man Utd and I am personally
committed to ensuring that they are given an enhanced voice, through the establishment
of a Supporter Advisory Board and a Supporter Share Scheme".
"As proprietors, we want
exactly the same thing as the supporters - a successful team and a strong club
- and we want to work in partnership to achieve those objectives."
The supporter advisory board will
consult with the football club's senior leadership and owners and will be made
up of representatives from supporter groups.
Manchester United football club
said it had started a direct dialogue with the Man Utd Supporters Trust to
identify a mutually beneficial fan share scheme involving a new class of
shares, which will each carry the same voting rights as shares owned by the
Glazer family.
In a statement, Manchester United Supporters
Trust described the fan share scheme as "potentially revolutionary",
but was concerned about whether the proposal would limit the number of such
shares and reduce the possibility of supporters attaining a meaningful
ownership stake.
It said in a statement "Manchester
United Supporters Trust is cautious about whether this Fan Share Scheme will
meet their own tests before they give its approval, as in spite of the huge
concession on voting rights that this proposal signals".
Man Utd ended 2nd in the Premier
League behind local competitors Man City and have failed to win a trophy since
2017.
Joel Glazer promised to continue to
back manager Solskjaer in the transfer market.
Glazer added that, "Our goal
is to success every competition we compete in, and we will continue to invest
in our academy and in the transfer market to support the manager in an effort
to meet the club’s goals".
