The idea came up in 2005 when the NFL proposed playing a league game outside the United States. The Arizona Cardinals are switching fields and are interested in playing a game abroad that season.
NFL England has a chance to host the game in London. It ended up in Mexico, but the idea of playing in London is now on the NFL’s radar.
David Tosser, the NFL’s director of public relations, explained how the decision was made: “We did a lot of basic work. We could go to the owners and say, ‘This is how the game will work.
In February 2007, the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants met in London. Tosser said London makes sense because if the NFL wants to be considered an international game, hosting a game in London feels “like it’s the way it is.”
With the NFL excited about the idea, London decision-makers have joined in. The Mayor’s Office and London’s Tourism Board are interested in opportunities to raise London’s profile in North America. The BBC is also interested because they have the opportunity to broadcast the game.
